Access Champion Volunteer

‘Access champions’ through their actions & dedication ensure everyone feels seen and supported at 1435  

What’s involved: 

  • Providing a warm and friendly welcome to our visitors at 1435, and ensuring they have a memorable, and enjoyable visit. 

  • Sharing knowledge on the accessibility support & opportunities available at 1435 to empower the visitor to get the most out of their visit. e.g. Assisted hearing system. Signed performance, touch tours etc. 

  • Providing guidance on how to access the building, location of lifts, ramps, accessible facilities (changing place, accessible toilets), equipment & catering, and who to ask for support during the visit. 

  • Having great conversations with our visitors, listening to their needs and answering any questions & ensuring everyone feels welcome. 

  • Working collaboratively with Cultural Services staff & fellow volunteers 

  • Supporting duty manager/building controller with evacuation of the building as required in an emergency. 

  • Supporting the promotion of Cultural services opportunities. 

  • Becoming familiar with the council’s health and safety policy, and completion of volunteer training. 

  • Time commitment – ideally once per week (4 – 5hour sessions) or more if you can.

  • Flexible volunteering opportunity – morning, afternoons, evenings and weekend opportunities available. 


This role may be for you: 
 

  • If you have a passion for access and inclusion, enjoy making people feel welcomed and want to make a real difference for our visitors with disabilities.  

  • If you have lived experience of the barriers faced by audiences and visitors with disabilities to ticketed events & places of heritage. 

  • If you have a love of the theatre, performing arts, or heritage.
